Before approving your home loan, every Malaysian bank checks two credit databases — CCRIS (Bank Negara) and CTOS (private credit reporting). A single 90-day late payment can derail your application. Here is how both systems work and how to ensure a clean record.
CCRIS: The BNM Credit Database
CCRIS (Central Credit Reference Information System) is maintained by Bank Negara Malaysia and contains your 12 months of repayment history for all bank loans, credit cards, hire purchase and overdrafts. Every bank in Malaysia reports to CCRIS monthly.
CCRIS shows: outstanding balances, repayment pattern (0 = on time, 1 = 1 month late, 2 = 2 months late, etc.), and applications in the past 3 months.
Free access: Get your CCRIS report free from any BNM branch or eCCRIS portal (bnmlink.bnm.gov.my) within minutes.
CTOS: The Private Credit Bureau
CTOS aggregates public records including bankruptcy proceedings, court judgements, dishonoured cheques and third-party trade references. Unlike CCRIS (which only shows bank data), CTOS includes non-bank creditors.
CTOS Score ranges: 697–850 = Good, 631–696 = Fair, 300–630 = Poor. Check your free CTOS Basic Report at myctos.com.
What Banks Actually Look For
| Factor | Green Flag | Red Flag |
|---|---|---|
| Payment record | All 0s for 12 months | Any 3+ (90-day late) |
| Outstanding loans | Low utilisation | Maxed-out credit cards |
| CTOS | No entries | Any court judgement |
| Applications | Minimal recent | Multiple within 3 months |
| Special attention | No SA entries | Rescheduled/restructured debt |
How to Clean Up Your Credit Record
- Pull CCRIS and CTOS reports — identify all negative entries
- Settle all arrears immediately
- For CTOS judgements: settle the debt and get a consent letter from creditor
- Wait 12 months after settling before applying for a home loan
- Reduce credit card utilisation below 30% of limit
